Household Hints and Helpers Using Vinegar

There was a time when the majority of the cleansers that people used in and around their homes were made from the supplies they had. They could not have afforded to purchase commercial cleansers even if these items had been available. So they learned to use the things they had to clean the dirt and grime away.

Vinegar was one of the items that were easily purchased at the stores that were available to shop in, or the ingenious people could allow apples to ferment and create their own apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar was used to treat ailments of the body, to doctor the livestock, to cook with, and to clean the house.

Vinegar is fantastic at cutting grease and grime out of clothing. So the substance was mixed in with the wash water on wash day to help get the clothing cleaner with less scrubbing. The pungent liquid also helped to remove odors from the clothing. During the Wild West days people wore their clothing for several days at a time before they were washed. The clothing took on odors that were hard to get out on wash day, so the aspiring housewives would put vinegar into the rinse water and this would eliminate some of those odors.

The floors inside the home were often scrubbed with sand because the sand could remove the grime. Sand is abrasive so the women would pour the sand on the floor and rub it into the wood grain using a broom. Then they swept the sand out of the house and used a vinegar rinse on the floors to make them smell better.

Pretty girls have always liked pretty clean hair. One of the ways that the girls made their hair smell nice for long periods of time was to use this magic odor killing liquid when they rinsed. If they wanted their hair to feel soft they would use rain water they gathered in barrels to rinse their hair with. The rain water had a conditioning effect and left the hair soft and supple.

This magic liquid was used as an antiseptic to wash wounds before they were bandaged. It effectively killed bacteria and helped to prevent infections from setting in.

People drank small doses of this liquid every day to help improve their digestion. It helps individuals that have a history of indigestion and stomach disorders.

Because the vinegar is so good at removing odors women frequently mixed it with water to create a feminine hygiene product.

What Can You Use Vinegar For?

Perhaps the better question is to ask what vinegar cannot be used for. Through the centuries, humankind has used this remarkable liquid in cooking, industry, medicine and cleaning. Made up of acetic acid and water, this most basic and natural substance is making a comeback in the environmentally aware world of today. People have used vinegar as cleaner, food additive, odor remover, and even as a weed killer. Others have used vinegar to clean out and deodorize coffee makers, washing machines and dishwashers. So, what can you use vinegar for? Here are a few suggestions.

Vinegar as Cleaner in the Kitchen and Bathroom

In the kitchen and bathroom, make a paste of vinegar, baking soda and liquid detergent for cleaning hard, impervious surfaces like tile, glass and chrome. Need to clean out and deodorize a smelly drain? Simply pour a cup of baking soda into the drain followed by one half cup of heated, white distilled vinegar. Let the mixture sit for five or 10 minutes and rinse with hot water. Vinegar is also useful for cleaning splatters in the microwave, removing tough stains from coffee or tea cups and for getting rid of that spoiled food smell from a refrigerator. Cleaning with vinegar is one of the best ways to avoid using harsh, toxic chemical cleaners in your home.

Vinegar Does Wonders in the Laundry

You don't need those commercially manufactured cleaning products to get brighter colors, whiter whites and softer clothes form your laundry. Simply add one half cup of white distilled vinegar to the final rinse cycle of your washing machine. In order to get rid of tough stains from white clothes, add a cup of vinegar to a pot of water, bring it to a boil and carefully add the white articles to be cleaned. Turn off the burner or remove the pot from the heating source and let the items soak overnight. Vinegar and water mixed in equal parts and placed in a spray bottle make an effective spot remover for the toughest stains caused by mustard, ketchup, wine, rust and grass.

The Most Effective, Cheapest, All-Purpose Cleaning Solution

Many people have simply not taken the time to become familiar with all the uses for vinegar. As a natural disinfectant, vinegar as cleaner will kill just about any mold, mildew, bacteria or germs from on almost any surface. As a natural odor remover, a bowl of white distilled vinegar left overnight in a car will remove any odors left by a carsick passenger. A bit of vinegar added to your pets drinking water will also keep fleas away. You can even use undiluted vinegar to remove rust from garden spigots, tools, screws or immovable rusty bolts. Take some time to find out about the many uses of vinegar as greener cleaner, deodorizer, disinfectant and more.
